Shisanlitai Fm

Period:
Neoproterozoic

Age Interval:
Sinian (Ediacaran), Z (25)

Province:
Liaoning

Type Locality and Naming

Southern peninsula of Liaoning. The name Shisanlitai Fm derived from the Shisanlitai Stage named by Matsushita in 1931. The typical section is situated in Shisanlitai in Jinxian County and the reference section is in Qipanmo in Dalian City, Liaoning Province.

Synonym: (十三里台组)

Lithology and Thickness

The Shisanlitai Fm is a suite of carbonate rocks bearing stromatolites; and a persistent lithology and the red purple stromatolite-bearing limestone (popularly named the Northeast Red Marble) characterize the formation. Lower part is dark gray to gray, thin- to medium-bedded micritic limestone, oolitic micritic limestone, stromatolite-bearing limestone intercalated with powder crystalline limestone. Middle part consists of gray to purple, medium-bedded micritic limestone and stromatolite-bearing limestone intercalated with purple-greenish yellow shale. Upper part is purple to greenish yellow shale intercalated with stromatolite-bearing limestone. Total thickness varies from 57 to 278 m.

Lithology Pattern:
Reef limestone

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

The basal part with a bed of dark gray stromatolite-bearing limestone conformably overlies the underlying Yingchengzi Fm

Upper contact

Conformably overlain by the Majiatun Fm.

Regional extent

The Shisanlitai Formation is mainly distributed in Jinxian and Dalian area, and fragmentarily in Fuzhou area.
